How to reset Firefox default search engine

Recently my firefox was hijacked by ICQ. And every search through the address bar returns to the ICQ search engine. Even removal of related add-ons won’t work. After digging up the web for a solution, here is a simple way to reset the search facility.

  1. On the address bar, type ‘about:config’ without quotes.
  2. Locate keyword.url
  3. Right click on it and reset.

You may also wish to remove ICQ search through ‘manage search engines’.

If you insist on using ICQ, get lite here.

Oh, by the way, evidently this is the fix for any program that has hijacked the default search because bing that did this to me. I try soooo hard to watch out for automatic add-ons and changes of default but somehow they insidiously find a way to sneak by.

Unfortunately, Yahoo has found a way to by-pass these changes to the Firefox about:config file. As much as I change 3 files having to do with the default engine, Yahoo still manages to sneak in there!!! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need also to delete the content of the folder
    searchplugins\ICQ*.* in the user setting

  16. This does not work in Win 7 64 bit even after a restart of FireFox 3.x. Possibly a complete operating system restart may enable the reset. I’ll see
